About BDE Courses

What is a BDE course?

The Beginner Driver Education (BDE) course at BSafe Driving School is a Ministry-approved driver education program designed to help new drivers develop safe, confident, and responsible driving skills.

This is one complete course, not separate programs, combining structured online learning with professional in-car instruction.

Course Structure

The BDE course consists of:

  • 30 hours of online instruction
The online portion covers Ontario traffic laws, road signs, defensive driving strategies, hazard perception, collision avoidance, and real-life driving scenarios. Students must complete the full online portion before in-car lessons begin.

  • In-car driving lessons
Once the online portion is completed, students move on to practical in-car training with a qualified instructor. Lessons focus on real-world driving skills, safe decision-making, and preparing students for road test conditions.

Course Completion Timeline

From the date of purchase, students have one (1) year to complete the full BDE course. During this period, students who have not completed the course will receive reminder notifications to help them stay on track.

Course Expiry & Certification

If the course is not completed within one year, it will expire. Students may still complete in-car lessons; however:

  • No BDE certificate will be issued

  • The course will not be certified with the Ministry of Transportation

  • Students will not qualify for insurance discounts

Students who wish to obtain certification after expiry may re-enroll by paying a $250 re-enrollment fee and completing all course requirements.

Learning With a Professional Instructor

Why should I learn from a qualified driving instructor?
A professional instructor ensures you learn all essential skills, including defensive driving, hazard recognition, and safe decision-making. Instructors understand exactly how students are evaluated during road tests and prepare you accordingly.

How does instructor training make driving safer?
Instructor vehicles are equipped with dual brakes, allowing instructors to intervene if necessary. Lessons are conducted in a controlled, insured environment, providing a safer learning experience than casual practice.

Does an instructor help with road test preparation?
Yes. Instructors focus on the exact skills and behaviors tested during the road exam, including lane changes, intersections, parking, and observation habits.

Using an Instructor’s Car for the Road Test

Why should I use a driving instructor’s car for my road test?
Instructor vehicles are well-maintained, road-test compliant, and familiar to the student. This reduces stress and allows the student to focus fully on driving performance.

Is using an instructor’s car safer for the road test?
Yes. Instructor vehicles have dual brakes and are fully insured for instructional and road test use, providing added safety and reassurance for both the student and the examiner.

Does using an instructor’s car reduce test cancellations?
Yes. Instructor vehicles are regularly inspected to ensure lights, signals, brakes, tires, and mirrors are fully functional, minimizing the risk of test cancellation due to vehicle issues.

Will I get a warm-up before the test?
In many cases, a short warm-up drive is provided before the road test to review key maneuvers and help the student feel prepared.

Can I use my own car instead?
Yes, if your vehicle meets all road test requirements. However, many students prefer using the instructor’s car for familiarity, safety features, and peace of mind.

Why should I learn from a qualified instructor?
Professional instructors offer structured, reliable teaching. They:

  • Cover a complete road safety curriculum including defensive driving.

  • Support students through each step with tailored feedback.

  • Prepare learners for real road conditions and test expectations.

  • Teach situational awareness, hazard response, and driving etiquette.

How does instructor‑led training build confidence?
Instructors identify areas that need improvement and guide students through corrective practice. This ongoing feedback, especially during in‑car lessons, helps students feel prepared for driving independently.

Driving Lessons & Scheduling

How are lessons scheduled?
Lessons are arranged based on instructor availability and student preferences. We offer flexibility with options for weekdays, evenings, and weekends where possible.

Can I take more lessons than the minimum requirement?
Yes. Students may purchase additional driving lessons for extra practice or test preparation.

What happens if I arrive late for a lesson?
Punctuality is important for effective training. If you arrive more than 10 minutes late, lesson time may be shortened, and a late arrival penalty may be applied.

Payments & Registration

Is there a registration fee?
Yes. A $250 non‑refundable registration fee is collected at the time of signup. This covers administrative processing and program setup and is non‑refundable.

How can I pay for the course?
BSafe accepts standard payment options such as e‑transfer, debit/credit, and cash. Payment plans may be available based on the package selected.

Road Test & Insurance

Will the course help me prepare for my road test?
Yes. BSafe’s BDE course includes targeted practice and guidance tailored to the expectations of the G2 road test, increasing the likelihood of success.

Can completing the BDE course lower my insurance costs?
Many insurance companies offer discounts to drivers who complete a Ministry‑approved course because trained drivers tend to have better road safety habits.

Additional Questions

Do I need my own insurance for lessons?
No. When you train with BSafe’s vehicles, they are fully insured for instructional use, including dual brakes and secondary controls.

Will my course completion be recorded with the Ministry?
Yes. After you successfully complete the BDE program, BSafe will report this to the Ministry of Transportation. You can request your licence history from ServiceOntario as formal proof.
